Dequindre Cut's murals turn a greenway walk into a changing art route

A greenway can be more than a route between destinations. Along Detroit's Dequindre Cut, murals and preserved graffiti create reasons to pause, changing how the walls and overpasses are experienced by someone passing on foot or bicycle.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy describes dozens of original murals along the Cut and an ongoing program commissioning local artists. Its mural map offers a starting point for a focused outing. Choose a small section or a few works rather than making the entire route a checklist.

Current published hours for the RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut are daily, 6 a.m.–10 p.m., subject to notices and special arrangements. Check the conservancy's current visitor guidance and route conditions before leaving. The Freight Yard's food, entertainment and other seasonal offerings have separate schedules; an open greenway does not guarantee an operating concession or event.

Step out of moving traffic before looking closely or taking a photograph, and keep shared paths clear. Notice how scale, color and the existing wall shape affect a work, then compare another piece farther along. A photograph from an earlier year records a moment in a changing art landscape, so use the current map and the work in front of you to guide the visit.
