Rivera Court rewards a closer look at the people inside Detroit's industry
The DIA's mural cycle connects labor and technology, with a free online guide and general admission for eligible tri-county residents.

The scale of Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals can make a first visit feel overwhelming. One way into the work is to follow the people: where they stand, what they handle and how their activity connects to the surrounding machines. The room becomes a set of relationships rather than a single enormous image.
Rivera created the fresco cycle in 1932–1933 around all four walls of the Detroit Institute of Arts' central court. The museum's online Rivera Court experience adds context about the work, its creation and particular details. Explore it before visiting or return to it afterward to examine something that was difficult to see closely in the room.
General admission is free for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County residents who present identification at the front desk. The DIA at 5200 Woodward Avenue currently opens Tuesday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.–9 p.m.; and weekends, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with Monday and listed holiday closures.
Check current gallery notices before planning around a specific room, since select second-floor spaces are temporarily closed for improvements. Special exhibition arrangements can differ from general admission. Give the murals time, then choose a smaller detail to reconsider. A question about a worker, a machine or a repeated form can make another visit meaningfully different from the first.
